Dopplevolfsball as Happy Friends win County Cup
- Updated: September 19, 2018
County Cup
A delightful Autumn afternoon in Ealing’s Pitshanger Park and three teams assembled to battle for the second ever County Cup, the favourites Ben Stanier’s Pitshanger Panthers, Alex Stanier’s Woodfield Warriors and Gregory Stanier’s Happy Friends.
Each team would play each other twice in a round robin with whoever wins the most matches taking the cup.
Pitshanger Panthers 20-10 Happy Friends
The first match saw service as normal as a Panthers team featuring Ben Stanier, Toby Davies and Lewis Thorpe beat Gregory Davies, Andrew Woodward and sub Marek Larwood of the Friends. There were a surprising number of Volfsball’s in the first half of the tournament and it was only when it was discovered that the old sized ring (it was shrunk an inch) was being used that it was swapped for the second half of the round robins.
Nonetheless it was Ben Stanier who dominated from the field with Volfsball’s propelling his team to victory.

The Volfsball’s continued to flow. Gregory Stanier and Andrew Woodward scoring them for the Friends as they obiliterated the Warriors. The Friends seemed to find some rhythm playing together, and great defensive play from Andrew Woodward was vital in an impressive victory.

In perhaps the game of the tournament the Warriors threw the Cup wide open. The heavily favoured Panthers found themselves out hustled by an organised Warriors team that featured Alex Stanier, Hew Ingram and sub Andrew Woodward. The lack of moment from Davies and Thorpe was exposed by Warriors, and not even a Ben Stanier Volfsball could beat the organised one point shooting from the opposition. A real upset and a great victory for the Warriors.
Pitshanger Panthers 12-13 Happy Friends
Stamina seemed to have drained from the Panthers after their shock defeat, and the ever improving Happy Friends surged into an early lead. Yet another Ben Stanier Volfsball made things even but the Panthers seemed to be relying on Volfsballs rather than the one point accuracy adopted by the Happy Friends. The Friends held on for a great victory meaning they could lift the County Cup with a victory over the Woodfield Warriors.
Woodfield Warriors 11 vs 19 Happy Friends
The Warriors drafted in Volfhungry Ben Stanier as their third player in a bid to keep their championship bid alive, but the Friends were playing some great Volfsball now. The Warriors had no answer for the Friends cross field passes and tight defence. Gregory Stanier’s team won comfortably and with that took the trophy in one of the surprises of the season.

You would be forgiven for thinking the drama was over as the two teams met in this dead rubber. But with the pressure relieved both sides went for extravagant shots in what turned into something of an exhibition match. The highlight being an incredible Dopplevolfsball from Lewis Thorpe, smashing in a peach from a volley. Also we saw the first ever headed Volfsball from both sides and yet more Volfsballs from Ben Stanier who registered six on the day. A commanding victory with the Panthers form coming a bit too late for them.
All in all a wonderful day of Volfsball.
