Larwood Invitational Cup 2015
In a season full of drama and insect bites, the Volfsball season drew to a possible close with the Larwood Invitational Cup. Just three teams competed in the round robin battling for silverware with a retail value of £8.99.
Competing were the form slumping Muswell Hill Supermoons whose brave captain Marek Larwood battled illness to lead his team featuring Simon Feilder, Mat Somerville and Lou Sanders. Facing the Moons were rivals the Camden Kongs with the brothers David and John Reed and Idil Sukan, and finally the new boys of Volfsball the Harringay Choppers captained by Tom Bell, with Tom Hall and James Rowland. All teams would play each other once, if no team won both games then the top two teams on points difference would face off in the final. The field was damp with excitement as the players ran on to the pitch.
FULL REPORTS & STATS HERE
GAME 1 – SUPERMOONS VS CHOPPERS
The Choppers faced the Moons in the first game. Sanders scoring lots early doors for the Moons, but a flurry of scores from the Choppers and poor shooting from the Moons saw the Choppers come out on top.
The Supermoons went on to face the Kongs in the second game, needing a win to stay in the competition. A low scoring affair the game turned as John Reed stepped into the no go zone while trying to defend a Larwood shot. This led to a free shot for Larwood, he went for a kick and converted. Those three points coupled with stout defending from Somerville and Feilder led to a 13-10 Supermoons victory.
So it was down to the last game. The Choppers needed to win to lift the cup, the Kongs needed a victory of more than three points to make the final. But the result was never in question. The Kongs defended deep again, forcing the Choppers to go for the big shots. Rowlands responded and hit a Volfsball to give them a 6-1 lead. From then on it was the Tom Bell show, with the captain hitting a record equalling three Volfsball’s to lead his team to a comfortable 23-10 victory and the Volfsball Cup.
Bell was elated as his team, barely a month old, managed to claim one of the greatest prizes in sport. The Harringay Choppers cheers echoed round the empty field as the gracious Kongs and Supermoons applauded their victorious peers. A great individual display by Bell capped a great first season of Volfsball.
