West Wirral Snakehips vs Rhein Rhur Germinators

A new team was in town as the West Wirral Snakehips arrived to take on the giants of the game. Henning Wehn’s Germinators had yet to chalk up a victory in their first two matches and the long armed German hero was hoping that experience would send the wonders in white green and red to victory.

As usual Henning started from the bench opting to coach his 75% English team to an early lead. It worked as Thia Russell was on fire early shooting and blocking the Germinators into a 3-2 lead.

The Snakehips fought back in the second Andy all over the pitch blocking and shooting, leaving the game delicately poised at half time.

The third quarter was very much the quarter of the Henning, the German captain scoring from all over the field. Suddenly they looked like champions propelled into an 8-5 lead. The Snakehips still playing good Volfsball but hurt by near misses shooting from the field.

Within seconds of the fourth quarter, the Snakehips hit form, Rob suddenly finding shooting form, and the team surging back to 8-8. Tension was rife as with less than the minute to go both teams searched for their first win. Then like a bolt from the blue Andy crushed the Germinators with a Volfsball. As usual most players didn’t realise this had happened and the game had to be stopped while video footage was consulted. The Volfsball was confirmed, the Snakehips up 13-9. The Germinators were left still looking for their first win, while the debutants celebrated a fine victory.

Rhein Ruhr Germinators vs Muswell Hill Supermoons

Already disillusion was spreading among the Germinators ranks. Nick Dixon was yet again moaning about wanting to join another team despite being outplayed by his captain and Thia Russell in the earlier game.

Larwood, Feilder and Howie started the game for the Supermoons and it the game was almost over after a clinical first quarter. The Moons connecting on 8 out of 13 shots and the exertion of the previous game taking it’s toll. First quarter ended 8-1.

The second quarter and the game was attracting a crowd in the form of a lady picking blackberries in the field. Meanwhile Super sub James Kettle went off to find his wife (pre-existing not looking for a new wife) mid game. He was not to be seen again until the fourth quarter. Henning couldn’t find his shooting skills from the previous game and Jamie Glassman came on to add some points for the Moons, rounding out the half 13-3.

The lady with the blackberries lost interested as the annihilation continued, Glassman rounding out the quarter with a spectacular last second shot to put the Supermoons up 16-3.

A furious Henning When berating his team from the sidelines ‘Come on do you still want to play or what?’ But the Germinators were broken and despite a lucky bounce score from the contentious Dixon they found themselves facing the biggest ever Volfsball defeat 22-4. The Supermoons deadly accurate shooting from the field shooting 47% as a team compared to just 13% from the Germinators.

Supermoons vs Snakehips

The league leading Supermoons went into the game hot favourites, but the Snakehips were rejuvenated after their break and tactically sound what was to follow was one of the greatest Volfsball matches.

The Moons up early from Glassman, then a couple of scores for Feilder and Rob which both just nicked the edge of the prism. There were calls for Hawkeye from the bench. Then as Glassman put the Moons up 3-1 the score was misrecorded as 2-2 which would prove costly. After inspection of video footage there were a number of controversies in the first half of incorrect scoring and misrecorded points that would prove vital later.

Despite this the first quarter was high quality stuff, great defending from the Snakehips, but Larwood scored a wonderful Volfsball to give the Moons 7-3 a lead going into the second.

This was where the Snakehips found their form, Andy deadly as a defended, Rob connecting on shots and Hannah picking up offensive rebounds, but the Supermoons surged again and the first half ended with confusion as to whether the score was 11-7, 11-6 or 10-6. In reality it was 12-7 but no-one was aware of this.

The 3rd quarter saw a brilliant start for the Snakehips with two double scores sandwiching a Feilder point and the score on the field was 12-11 within seconds. But the Moons came back to head in 16-13.

The 4th was more of the same quick scoring Josh Howie putting the Moons in from 17-13, then quick replies from the Snakehips to bring it back to 17-15. Again there was more confusion from the sidelines as James Kettle shouted in an 18-17 scoreline when it was 18-16. Hannah pulled the Snakehips back to 18-18 then in the last ten seconds Larwood missed and Rob sealed the points and a glorious 19-18 win. Later inspection of the video footage put the scores the other way round at 19-18 to the Moons, but the final score on the day counts, and the Snakehips deserved the victory with some fine team play from a group that didn’t have a substitute.

  • Rule clarification 1– if the ball hits the hoop first before the prism it is not counted as a point. If the ball hits the top side of the prism this does count as a point. If the ball bounces on the top side and through the hoop this counts as a Volfsball.
  • Rule clarification 2 – scores can be adjusted later when video footage is examined if it does not affect the result. However the result on the day always stands. If there is an error in the scoring system the result cannot be changed from that decided on the day.
