Muswell Hill Supermoons 18 v 17 Bethnal Green Lanterns
- Updated: May 9, 2016
Muswell Hill Supermoons vs Bethnal Green Lanterns
Moons – Larwood, Bannard, Hart
Lanterns – Stronge, Unger, Saunders
1st Third
Matt Stronge had defected from the Crouch End Tigers to form his own supergroup with the first East End team, the Bethnal Green Lanterns. They only had two players so drafted in regular supersub from Choke Hazard Thom Saunders. Meanwhile the Moons had an unchanged squad from the previous week and where they saw two close back to back victories.
Both teams playing at a leisurely pace in the heat, there was plenty of space for shooting. Behind some singles from Larwood the Moons went up 2-1. But a late Volfsball from guest Saunders saw the newcomers lead last years champions 7-2 at the end of the third.
2nd Third
Soon the Tigers were up 8-4, Tasha Unger hitting a couple of singles and the Moons looked to be in real trouble, then Captain Larwood stepped up to hit a Volfsball, giving the resurgent Moons a 9-8 lead. Then in a thoroughly entertaining quarter the teams went point for point seeing the second half end 11-11 with the game on a knife-edge.
3rd Third
At the start of the third a great spell of single shots saw the Tigers surge into a 17-12 lead . Thom Saunders playing a blinder for his substitute team. But with a minute left and the Moons looking increasingly desolate Captain Larwood hit his second Volfsball of the game to set up a grandstand finish at 17-17. The crowd on the sidelines chanted ‘Could this be the greatest ever game of Volfsball’. Richie Hart proved the hero in the last minute, hitting the single and blocking four shots in the space of the minute, giving the Supermoons the win. A great opening display from the Lanterns and the Supermoons third consecutive one point victory.
